June 28 – 3 mile run

Posted in Training at 7:52 pm by Stacy

With a trip to Reno,  Bethel Boy’s 9th birthday, my 39th birthday and honestly the rise in temperature this past weekend just didn’t make me want to run.   So today it was off for a 3 mile run.   Just Echo and I went off  to run on River Bench.  I walked the first quarter of a mile and then ran .75 miles, walked a little and then ran most of the rest of the way.

No “trotting” issues so that was nice.  The hardest part was just getting started, after that it felt good.   New running shoes were nice also.

June 28 – 3 mile run

Posted in Training at 7:48 am by Stacy

Today’s run didn’t end up being the full 3 miles.   I yet again had a stomach issue and had to turn back .5 file miles early.   I’m going to very much start watching what I eat.  Dried pasta to snack on is not a good snack at all!   I’m thinking if I have to eat anything, maybe oatmeal.  We will have to see what works.

Miles today:  2.46

Second Saturday of 1/2 marathon training

Posted in Training at 6:30 pm by Stacy

What an AWESOME 4 mile run this morning.   We got up at left around 6:30 and the temp was just about perfect.    We went on the Bizz Johnson Trail.  We are going to start making our long Saturday runs on the trail since that is where our half will be.

I felt really strong running.   I walked for the first .25 miles and then pretty much ran the rest of the way.   There is a slight grade as I ran for the first 2 miles, but once I turned around…..all down hill baby!  That’s why I’m running this half, there is hardly any hills.

I wish that I would have brought the camera this morning because it was so beautiful.   There was beautiful meadows, the river down bellow and flowers were blooming, the sky was blue – it was just wonderful.   I can’t wait until next Saturday.

I didn’t run on Thursday (3 miles) or Friday (2 miles) because I hurt my ankle on Tuesdays run.   Last night my legs were so achy and I think it was because I didn’t run those days.  My body is actually craving it!  Yeah!   And after my run today, what a high I felt.  I felt strong and like I could go out and do it again….right then.

Miles today:  4.01

Tuesday – 2 miler

Posted in Training at 11:35 am by Stacy

After dropping the kids off at bible camp I went to a new place to run.  I have so say I’m a creature of habit and I hate running new places.  Even thought today’s run was relatively short compared to what I have been doing (only 2 miles), although it didn’t seem as short because if I had ran on our “regular” road I would have known the markers and since I’ve ran over 3 miles on that road, 2 would have felt so short.   Oh well.

I felt pretty good while running, but there was a hill on this road that was fun going down, but not fun going back up.

First Saturday of 1/2 marathon training

Posted in Training at 10:02 am by Stacy

I’m switching over from Couch to 5K to 1/2 marathon training.   Mostly because I was doing the mileage to start the 1/2 training.  I’m focusing on getting the miles in, and doing a continuous run.

I didn’t quite make my 3 miles because Ben decided he wanted to run instead of biking.   Bethel Daddy left him behind and he was far behind so I turned back a quarter of a mile early, I tried to gain it back by looping around a few times, but came up short when I reached the car.

Miles today:  2.84

Miles this week: 8.73

Week 6, Run 2

Posted in Training at 10:23 am by Stacy

I was supposed to have only one day off from running, but on Saturday I spent over 10 hours on my feet helping out with a friends wedding.  My legs and feet were tired so I decided to give them an extra rest.

This I went out and hoped for a better run than Friday.   Basically any run that I completed was going to be better than Fridays, but I really wanted to feel strong and I really did.   Was it more mental than physical?  Who knows, but it felt great.

I broke my run up into two parts, not because I wanted to, but because they upgraded the Nike+ GPS app and I needed to stop it to find the cues that I needed when I ran back.

First run:  Walk 5, run 10, walk 3 run 10.   My stats for that where:  1.65 miles; 17:25 minute per mile; total time 28:46

Second run:  Walk 5, run 23, (I turned off and walked the rest of the way) (about a .1 of a mile):  My stats for that run are:  1.57 miles; 18:26 minute per mile; 28:56

Miles today:  3.22

Miles this week: 5.89

Miles last week: 12.16

Week 6, Run 1

Posted in Training at 7:39 pm by Stacy

Today just wasn’t a great day of running.   While the first half was awesome and I had really hit my stride coming back when I got the dreaded “runner’s trots“.   My husband and children were way ahead of me and I knew they were close to the van.  I called them and didn’t get an answer, thought I could make it a little farther, but as I kept going I realized there was no way.   Thank goodness we run on a long road with lots and lots of tall trees (and wide ones too) because I had my worst fear come true.  Using the forest as my toilet.   It was awful.

I don’t know if it was something I ate or what caused it, but it was a bad ending to what started out feeling like a good run.   I’m going to have to figure out the cause and start carrying tissues in my fanny pack.  But more than anything I just pray that it doesn’t happen again.

So I walked 5 min, ran 5, walked 3, ran 8, walked 3, ran 5, walked 5 and then ran for about 15 before the dreaded trots hit.

Miles today:  2.67

Miles this week: 2.67

Week 5, Run 3

Posted in Training at 8:27 pm by Stacy

The biggest hurdle in today’s run was finding a place to run.   I think Walter is a little bored with my River Bench Road running place.  I love it though because it has two slight hills it is shaded and there is NO ONE else on the road.   It’s perfect.

But in trying to let Walter have some say in what is going on, especially since he is being so supportive, we went into town.   I guess I should say that not only was Walter wanting somewhere else to run, but the kids wanted somewhere else to ride their bikes.

So into town we went.  First stop, the Bizz.   This lasted all of 5 minutes because Walter and I both were attacked by mosquitoes.   So then we decided to give the Meadow a try.   That lasted .33 miles and then we turned around and went back to the car due to my allergies and asthma acting up.   Neither have bothered me so far, so this was a shock, but really not a surprise when I realized how many thing were blooming – it’s a meadow after all!

So after a quick trip to the store since we were in town to get coffee creamer (important stuff) we went to River Bench.

I warmed up for 5 minutes and then started my running.   I had turned off the 5 minute interval announcement, so  I only heard my pace at the .25 mile markers, I think I’m going to turn it back on.    The first 5 minutes were hard, and then I got into a pretty good grove.   When it told me that I had reached the half way point of my 20 minute run I had to decide do I keep going and stretching my body (and mind) or do I turn back and do an “easy” run.    I decided to see what I could do.

After finishing a 20 minute run, I walked for 10 minutes and then ran for 20 minutes again.   During this time it was always in the back of my mind that I didn’t have to finish, I had already done what was required for the day, but then I would say in my mind that I would evaluate in 5 minutes and then each time I felt like I wanted to go on.   So today I ran for a total of 40 minutes.

So a little interesting info gathered by NIKE+ GPS app:   Since May 13 when I started using this app I’ve ran 26.4 miles, for 8:11:27 and I’ve burned 3232 calories.

Miles today:  3.5 (.33 at the ranch and 3.17 at the “usual” spot.

Miles last week: 7.39

Miles in June:  9.49

Week 5, Run 2

Posted in Training at 6:16 pm by Stacy

It wasn’t the easiest of runs today, not because the cycle of run/walks was hard, but because I woke up with a sinus headache and it just wouldn’t go away.

After a meeting at church and some time at home it was time to put the foot to the pavement.   It wasn’t my fastest, it wasn’t my longest and no records were broke.   It was just a get out and get it done run.

I guess in anticipation of my run and getting ready my headache did feel better and actually now I’m feeling pretty good.

A few rain drops fell as we ran and afterwards it just opened up and poured!

Today’s Run/Walk cycle was 5 Walk, 8 run, 5 walk, 8 run, 5 walk, 8 run, 5 walk, 8 run, walk for a minute or two (doing the runs twice from the original program).

Up on Monday is 20 minutes of running at once.  Should I do it twice?  Walk 5, run 20, walk 5 run 20, walk 5?

Week 5, Run 1

Posted in Training at 8:26 pm by Stacy

I was able to get out there today and run all by myself and it was delightful to run and not have to worry about the kids or that I was slowing down my husband.

I understand how runners get into a groove and do not like things to disturb their groove.   Today that disruption was forgetting my ear phones at home.  I still was able to listen to music and to hear my cues from the couch to 5K program because of the speaker in my iPhone.  The other disruption was that I got two phone calls during my run.   Thankfully it pauses both the nike+ application and the C25K program.

Another thing that I observed was that by now I figured it would be warm for my runs.   Today I ran with a long sleeve thinner shirt and then a heaver thermal type shirt over it.   When I was in the sun I was warm, when I was in the shade it was super cold.   There was still snow on the side of the road in a few places.  I was also wearing a thermal cap to keep my head warm and my head would have been cold without it.

I just love the road that I typically run.  Here is  a picture on my way back from reaching the end.

And here is the picture of the end of the road.   I love the view of the mountain and the trees

My run lasted for 57:51 minutes and consisted of 10 minute walk, 5 min run, 3 walk, 5 run, 3 walk, 5 run, 5 walk, 5 run, 3 walk, 5 run, 3 walk, 5 run.   The first run was hard, my legs hurt and I just didn’t want to do it.  The middle run/walks felt good and the last one was hard.    My per minute mile average was only 18:19 and that is a little disappointing.   I need to figure out between going farther or keeping the distance shorter and being quicker.   If I would have just done the C25K plan my speed might have been a little quicker.   So distance vs speed, which is better?
