Week 5, Run 1

Posted in Training at 8:26 pm by Stacy

I was able to get out there today and run all by myself and it was delightful to run and not have to worry about the kids or that I was slowing down my husband.

I understand how runners get into a groove and do not like things to disturb their groove.   Today that disruption was forgetting my ear phones at home.  I still was able to listen to music and to hear my cues from the couch to 5K program because of the speaker in my iPhone.  The other disruption was that I got two phone calls during my run.   Thankfully it pauses both the nike+ application and the C25K program.

Another thing that I observed was that by now I figured it would be warm for my runs.   Today I ran with a long sleeve thinner shirt and then a heaver thermal type shirt over it.   When I was in the sun I was warm, when I was in the shade it was super cold.   There was still snow on the side of the road in a few places.  I was also wearing a thermal cap to keep my head warm and my head would have been cold without it.

I just love the road that I typically run.  Here is  a picture on my way back from reaching the end.

And here is the picture of the end of the road.   I love the view of the mountain and the trees

My run lasted for 57:51 minutes and consisted of 10 minute walk, 5 min run, 3 walk, 5 run, 3 walk, 5 run, 5 walk, 5 run, 3 walk, 5 run, 3 walk, 5 run.   The first run was hard, my legs hurt and I just didn’t want to do it.  The middle run/walks felt good and the last one was hard.    My per minute mile average was only 18:19 and that is a little disappointing.   I need to figure out between going farther or keeping the distance shorter and being quicker.   If I would have just done the C25K plan my speed might have been a little quicker.   So distance vs speed, which is better?

Miles today:  3.15

Miles this week: 3.15

Week 4, Run 3

Posted in Training at 12:55 pm by Stacy

Felt pretty good, it was cool with a head wind when we were sheltered from the trees.  Didn’t go as far as the other run, but that was due to the fact that we had to get home, feed the kids so Bethel Daddy could take them to the movies.   I walked for 10 minutes, ran for 3, walked for 1 1/2 minutes, ran 5, walked 3, ran 10 (combined the 3 min run, 1 1/2 min walk, 5 min run and then went 30 more seconds).  On the walk back I ran for 3 minutes, ran a couple more minutes a few time.  So probably almost 25 minutes run time total!    The best part was that I had the best per minute mile yet – 18 even.  Whoo Hoo!

I told Bethel Daddy that for the first time in my life I am going the “extra mile”.  Instead of just doing the bare minimum I’m stretching and pushing my body.   I’m hoping some of this discipline will transfer over into other areas in my life.

To make my goal of 25 miles this month, all I need to do tomorrow is 1.25 miles.   I think I can do it.   I’m thinking of just getting up and getting dressed to go out before the day gets away from me.

Miles today:  2.84

Miles this week: 7.39 – I start my weeks on “Wednesday”

Miles last week: 6.09 –

Miles since May 4th: 23.78 – Can I make 25 by tomorrow?

Week 4, Run 2

Posted in Training at 8:31 pm by Stacy

Today I went 2.91 miles.  I really wanted to push myself because I would love to hit 25 miles by the first.   It leaves me 3 days to go 4.06 miles.   Maybe I will go for a mile walk tomorrow, that is if it stops snowing.   Yes, it’s May 28th and it’s snowing right now, quite briskly.

We went on our run late because we had to run into town and had issues getting what we needed.  Once we got home, about 3 hours later, we changed and loaded up the kids bikes and Echo.

I started out at a pretty brisk pace (at least for me).  I walked for 5 minutes before I turned on the “couch to 5K” app.  Something happened and about 3 minutes in it restarted the app.  Oh well, about 15 minutes of walking before I started my first 3 minute run.   It felt great, I stayed strong throughout and found that I wasn’t listening for the “you have 15 seconds left” sound.  The next walked seem too short, but it was only a minute and a half.   Next came 5 minutes.   I did a pretty good job of running the whole time, not super speedy, but I kept an even pace and ran for the complete 5 minutes.  The rest of the runs were pretty much the same.

To cool down I had about a mile to walk back to the car.  I tried to keep up a pretty brisk walk and even ran a few more times, running between telephone poles and trees.   There were a few times that as I was in a running series I went farther than  I had originally planned.  Over all I figure that I ran a little over 20 minutes with the 5 minute stretches being the most.

So tomorrow I hope to get out for a mile walk.   I won’t break any speed records, but it will just feel good to stretch those muscles out that are a little sore tonight.  Monday morning, Lord willing,  we will repeat today’s run.    It feels good to be getting stronger.

I even commented to Bethel Daddy that when we are in San Diego in a few weeks we will be at the place in the program where we are to run for 25 minutes.  How exciting to go run around the harbor with the cool sea breeze blowing and running strong for those 25 minutes.  Plus it will be easier because we will be doing it 5500 feet lower than we are training at now.

Miles today:  2.91

Miles this week: 4.55 – I start my weeks on “Wednesday”

Miles last week: 6.09 –

Miles since May 4th: 20.94 – Can I make 25 in the next 3 days?

Week 4, Run 1

Posted in Training at 9:21 pm by Stacy

So today I went up to 16 minutes of running. A 3 min run, 1 1/2 min walk, 5 min run, 3 min walk – repeat. I decided to make a Dr’s appointment for Bethel girl since she has been fighting something for over a month. Having about an hour and 15 minutes until I had to be into town I knew I had to get my run in right then, the rest of the day was packed and the weather forecast was just going to get worse as the day progressed.

I left the kids at home and went in a figure eight around the blocks at the house. Since I had to stop and check in on the kids twice and knew I needed a shower before I took Bethel Girl to the Dr I had to cut my run short by about a half of mile. While I got all the runs in, I cut short the 5 minute cool down walk.

It was cold, wet and windy. No records were broken today, but was broken was my ability to make excuses and not get out there and move my body. I can’t believe I was running for 5 minutes straight, when just in the beginning running for a minute was a killer.

Miles this week: 1.64 – I start my weeks on “Wednesday”
Miles last week: 6.09 –
Miles since May 4th: 18.03 – I will have logged over 20 miles this past month – WHOO HOO! Go me!

Week 3, Run 3

Posted in Training at 9:04 pm by Stacy

Bethel Daddy stayed home today so we could enjoy some family time since he was gone at Men’s retreat this past weekend.

We decided to go on a run together about 8:30, during the process of getting ready, Bethel Daddy pulled something in his back. He tried to push on but could hardly walk and was standing crooked. I called the Dr, got him an appointment and left him to deal with his disappointment of being sidelined. If there is one thing that Walter doesn’t like is being sidelined for anything. He hates anything that hinders his mobility.

I go to my favorite running place, just Echo and I. This is a treat because I usually would need to take the kids. I started my GPS program and then I started my C25K program a little bit sooner than I wanted. I just went with it. I felt really good during all of my runs and instead of turning back at the 1/2 way point I kept going through all my runs and then turned around and walked the rest of the way. Since I felt so good I wanted to go the farthest distance that I have so I pushed.

On my walking back I kept up a pretty good pace. The GPS gives me times at quarter mile marks and at 5 minute marks. I got a wild hair and decided to run some more. I started thinking “I’ll run to just that tree” and then I would get to that tree and decide to go to the next one. I would then run again and decided to walk at a quick pace and then I broke out in running again. I was just amazed that I went above and beyond what was required of me and I felt good about. I might be turning into a runner yet.

When it was all said and done, Lance Armstrong’s voice came on to say that I went farthest and was the best time yet.

So here are the stats:

Miles this week: 6.09 – I went on one less run during this week.

Miles last week: 7.01 – I miss calculated this. I just reviewed my runs.

Miles since May 4th: 16.39

Miles before May 4th: BIG FAT ZERO!

The benefits are finally paying off

Posted in Training at 9:58 am by Stacy

What a few busy days for us in the Bethel household. We had the local 3rd grade history day where we learned about not only our local history, but about those pioneers that settled California. It was lots of walking as we toured uptown. That was Friday and it was supposed to be a run day. By the time we got home and settled when I asked the kids to go on my run with me, they both said they wanted to go in the morning. Since bedtime the night before was about 10:30 and they had gotten up early on Friday to go to the history day I let them sit there and veg while watching the Disney Channel.

I knew we had a busy Saturday, I had a 2:00 appointment at the Apple store 1 1/2 hours away. Since we homeschool, we aren’t too speedy in getting ready in the morning. About 9:30 I decided it was now or never so I went and prepared for my run and told the kids to get ready also. I loaded up the kids, bikes and dog into the van and we started to go to my favorite place. But as we pulled out of the driveway the rain drops fall. I debated on if I should continue on or if I should not waste the gas. I decided I needed to find my “want to” and keep going. If we arrived there and it was still pouring rain then we would wait 5 min in the car. Bethel Girl was in the back seat whining “I have holes in my helmet, I’m going to rained on”, but I drove quietly praying that the rain would stop when we got there.

As we parked the van, no rain was in sight! Praise the Lord!

I have decided that I need to give myself a longer warm up and cool down walk than just the 5 minutes that is planned into the Couch to 5K program. I went ahead and walked about a quarter of a mile before starting up the “app” that I have that keeps track of what day I am on in the program and gently tells me when to run and when to walk. I also use the Nike+ GPS app that I start at the beginning so that it tracks my total distance.

As I got into my first 3 minute run I really felt strong. I felt like I was really doing it and that I am going to make it to my goal of running a 5K on the 4th of July and running the 1/2 marathon in October. Running 3, 4 or 5 miles doesn’t seem overwhelming anymore. Each minute more of running I do I am that much closer to going the distance.

Instead of turning around at the 1/2 way point, I kept going for one more cycle so that I would have just that much longer to walk and stretch out my muscles. When all was said and done I had went 2.15 miles in 39.17 minutes. My fastest pace was 10.01.

But more than going the farthest distance, it’s that I wanted to do it. I didn’t have to worry about Walter being disappointed if I didn’t do it, or sitting on my lazy butt all morning until it was time to get ready to go to Reno.

I’m thinking ahead. Thinking about what I can do on my off run days. Thinking about being strong. and most of all finding my “want to” which is huge!

Week 3, Run 1

Posted in Training at 8:32 pm by Stacy

So this weeks run was a 5 minute warm up walk, 1 1/2 minute run, 1 1/2 minute walk, 3 min run, 3 min walk, 1 1/2 min run, 1 1/2 min walk, 3 min run and a 5 minute cool down walk.   I didn’t go as far as we have in the past and I wonder why that is.

The one thing that I’m going to start changing is that I’m going to start stretching before we leave the house.  I noticed that during the runs my top of my thighs were hurting and so were my calves.

During my run on Sunday, I would quit running with just 3 or 4 before the end of the run time. Today I ran until the sweet little Australian voice told me that it was time to walk.   I’m proud of myself for that.

So in two weeks I have went from barely being able to run 1 minute and felt like I was dying to being able to run 3 minutes at once and knowing that I won’t die.   Pretty good accomplishment.

Last week I was thinking that I was going to just do the 1/2 marathon mileage, even if I had to walk it.  Now I’m thinking that I will be able to do it!

Bethel Daddy and I were talking about what will happen after we run the 1/2 in October.   There is a concert that we want to go to in San Francisco the next day.   I’m hoping that we will be able to find a babysitter and that after we do the 1/2 we can leave for the night and then spend Sunday in San Francisco, go to the concert and then come back home on Monday or Tuesday.  I told Bethel Daddy that I want to find a hotel with a spa and get a massage.  I think I will have earned it.

So here are my stats:

Miles this week:  1.73

Miles last week:  9.35

Total Miles since May 4th 12.72

Miles before May 4th – ZERO!

Motivational fail today

Posted in Training at 10:09 pm by Stacy

So today I didn’t run like I was scheduled to.  I’ve been in funk this week and the weather was just horrible today.  It has rained, snowed, rained some more and snowed more.  It wasn’t the kind of snow that we had on Sunday, it was wet snow.

So tomorrow no excuses…I’m bucking up and doing it.  I’ll get out there and run my 1 1/2 minute, walk 1 1/2 minutes, run 3 minutes, walk 3 minuts x 3 tomorrow!

Week 2, Run 3

Posted in Training at 7:53 pm by Stacy

I woke up in a cruddy mood today.  I just more than anything wanted to be left alone, so the family went off to church and I just relaxed, finished a book, had a great cup of coffee and cuddled with the two cutest dogs.

When Bethel Daddy got home from church he asked me if I was ready to go run.  I think I shot him a dirty look.   I have yet to find my “want to” with running, I think it pops up every now and then, but most of the time my “want to” is sitting on the couch.

I got up and we took off.   It was 37 degrees and spitting snow.   Since the weather was so bad we left the kids at home with instructions to not go outside or get into anything.   They are pretty trust worthy kids so I figured things would be ok, plus we were only going around the block a few times.

Since I had thought spring had arrived, my gloves have been put away, the quickest pair I could find was my gardening gloves.   Who cares, I’m not trying to win a fashion contest of being the best looking runner, I’m just getting out there.  So off we went with a skull cap on my head (with a pony tail bump), big thick leather gardening gloves, my iphone, husband and dog (we left the pup with the kids).

I forgot to start the Nike GPS app on my phone so my mileage was a little bit off, but I had only went 5 minutes before I noticed it.   So I’m saying that I went the same distance as Friday.  1.99 miles, but the exciting thing is that my time went down again.  Even Lance Armstrong came on and told me that it was my best time yet  😉

So it was bitter cold, windy and it really started to snow as we finished, but I did it.   And I was in a better mood than when I went out.

So here are my stats:

Miles this week:  9.35 (will reset on the next run)

Total Miles since May 4th 10.99

Miles before May 4th – ZERO!
